Sthala purana
On the Mangalagiri hill the Lord is worshipped as Panakala Narasimha: a face with an open mouth, into which devotees pour panakam, a drink of jaggery water. By popular belief the Lord accepts about half of each offering and the rest returns as prasadam.
The hill is said to be shaped like an elephant, the form taken by Hrasva Srungi. The Lakshmi Narasimha temple at the foot is known for its very tall gopuram.
